If you feel wisdom tooth pain

Wisdom teeth, or third molars, typically begin to emerge between the late teens and early twenties. However, they often do not erupt in the correct position, which can lead to various dental problems.
Pain caused by wisdom teeth tends to worsen if left untreated and may result in spreading inflammation.
We recommend having your wisdom teeth evaluated by a dentist as early as possible to prevent further complications.

Wisdom Tooth Pain

Pain from wisdom teeth may result from one or more of the following.

  • Discomfort from the tooth erupting (coming through the gums)
  • Inflammation of the gums around the tooth (pericoronitis)
  • Tooth decay affecting the wisdom tooth
  • Pressure against neighboring teeth
  • Impacted wisdom tooth causing inflammation in the gum or bone

Impacted Wisdom Tooth and Inflammation

When a wisdom tooth remains partially or fully impacted in the gums or jawbone, it can create an environment where bacteria easily accumulate. This may lead to inflammation, swelling, or pus formation. In more severe cases, it can cause jaw pain or difficulty opening the mouth.

Depending on the position of the tooth, we may refer you to an oral surgeon at a larger hospital for specialized care.
